Whales watching in Thailand, an amazing experience one hour from Bangkok.
I just came back from a great adventure in the gulf of Thailand, a day trip whales watching with a great group of photographers.
The trip started at 6 AM at Chong Nonsi BTS and in less than 2 hours we were on the location, a small fishermen village under Bung To bridge. Time to jump on the boat and we started our navigation in search of Bryde’s Whales.
Everyone were very excited since in the previous days people spotted around 10 whales in a single day.
Bryde’s Whales are resident almost all year in the gulf of Thailand but the best time to spot them outside Samut Songkran Province is from October to end of November. In this period the anchovies are not too big and they are a perfect meal for the baby whales. That’s the reason why the Whales migrates to this area.
The boat is a standard Thai Fishing boat with a rooftop where you can enjoy the sun and try to spot whales at the horizon. I spot one on the way back home!!! It was awesome, all the crew and passengers thanked me.
Before arriving to the open sea we navigated through many fish farms, a very nice and unique landscape. Hundreds of stilt houses over the water with many different kind of birds.
After 1 and half hour we were in the deep waters and our crew started to spot whales in the area. The boat radio was always on, the crews of the different boats communicate to each others in case anyone spot whales. Helping each others is necessary!!!
No whales for the first 4 hours until our spotter on the deck start to shout “Sip Song, Sip Song” ( that it means twelve, twelve), right in front of us there was a big female whale with his baby. They were eating anchovies and all the birds around trying to catch some little fishes, it was very cool atmosphere.
Unfortunately for us this unique moment did not last much, the Whales after couple of minutes started to swim away. We followed them for more than an hour and then we lost them.
In the second part of the trip we spotted another whale and around 3 pm we start our navigation back to the pier. During the way back we enjoyed many birds migration back to mainland.
We arrived back at the pier around 4 pm, at 7 pm we were in Bangkok
I recommend this experience to everyone that want to escape from the common Bangkok activities and spend relaxing day on a boat.
Here a gallery with the selection of my best photographs from the trip. Enjoy.
